Laptop Batteries
One of the most important aspects of a computer is the battery. While every computer is slightly different, today most laptop batteries are made to provide about 2.5 hours of standard use when fully charged. Although this is a huge improvement from years ago, experts continue working to create batteries that will last much longer. For instance, a few of the current computers have batteries with a life of five hours using a single charge but these are still not as affordable or lightweight as developers want.
Even though many computer manufacturers claim that laptop batteries are designed to hold a four to five-hour charge, they fail to mention that this includes time when the computer is in hibernation. With millions of people now being laptop owners, the need for laptop batteries that can provide more staying power is high. For individuals who travel, sitting on long flights, having the ability to work longer obviously has many advantages.
The good news is that several things can be done regarding laptop batteries to extend life. For one thing, individuals can now purchase an extended life, internal battery, one that will provide as much as two additional hours of use time. However, external batteries are also available, which are simply plugged into the computer. The downside to this option is that while a person could get up to nine hours of use, external laptop batteries are quite large, sometimes bigger than the actual computer.
In addition to more use time, the life of laptop batteries can be extended by changing the computer's power settings. For this, the battery icon is opened and the power saver mode checked. The only consideration is that while the battery life will be extended, a very slight change in the computer's performance may be noticed. Some people state the change is so subtle that switching to power saver mode is worth it.
Even changing the computer's screen helps to extend the life of laptop batteries. All a person needs to do in this case is reduce the display's brightness. Next, to get the most out of laptop batteries, when running the computer solely on battery, the battery should be allowed to completely drain before being recharged. This eliminates the risk of the battery being overcharged, which will wear it down much faster. This method also improves overall battery performance.
If the Internet is not being used, the computer could be switched over to a Wi-Fi network. This not only stops the battery from being drained, it actually adds to the battery. Additionally, the battery should never simply be removed from the computer unless done by a professional. The reason is that if mishandled, accidental discharge could cause permanent damage. Finally, when people shop for a new computer, laptop batteries should be a part of the decision in that the higher quality battery the more life and use it will offer.
